這本書主要講了一位長著滿頭特別的紅頭髮，一雙大大的眼睛，小臉蛋上長滿了雀斑，身體瘦小的小姑娘——安妮·雪梨，來到了綠山牆之家。他以他的善良，純真，熱衷幻想和喋喋不休的語言打動了瑪麗娜，讓她留了下來。而且正是這一次，紅發女孩開始了自己的成長經歷和生活的磨練。最終安妮同樣用她的美如願以償的當了一名教師。
